Where Friendswood stands today, orange orchards, fig orchards, and rice fields once thrived. Early Quaker settlers turned the land into a lush productive landscape, driven by the Christian spirit of brotherhood and communal living. It all began in 1895 when Quakers Frank Jacob Brown and Thomas Hadley Lewis felt directed to this area as an ideal setting for a colony. On July of that year, by official deed of trust, the colony became officially known as Friendswood.
Today, Friendswood continues to thrive, though in a much different form. What was once a farming region is now a gorgeous modern community of exquisite single family homes, detailed landscapes, and lots of open natural space. The current population is above 36,000, spread over parts of two counties- northern Galveston and southern Harris County. Running through the center of town, Clear Creek offers residents direct water access to both the Gulf of Mexico and Galveston Bay. Notably, only 70% of the 21 square miles of land covered by Friendswood are developed. This leaves plenty plenty of room for commercial, industrial, and residential development.
Friendswood makes up part of the Houston-The Woodlands-Sugar Land metropolitan area. It lies only about 20 miles southeast of Houston, making it easy for residents to enjoy all that the city has to offer. Other cities in the immediate vicinity include Pearland, League City, and Pasadena. Meanwhile, a short drive east takes one to Galveston Bay and all the recreational activities it has to offer.
With its convenient location, beautiful landscapes, and great selection of single family homes, Friendswood has become one of the Houston area's most popular communities.
