Iowa Colony is located off State Highway 288 just south of Manvel. It is part of northern Brazoria County. Founded in 1908, it received its name from its founders- Iowans G.I. Hoffman and Robert Beard. It wasn't until 1919 that the community received its first post office. Thereafter, rice farming was introduced around 1920. Even though it did not sit on a railroad line, Iowa Colony was still served by the Gulf, Colorado, and Santa Fe lines near the city of Manvel. The population grew very slowly until the 1960s came around. At any given time, there were only a few dozen people. However, the discovery of oil in 1948 brought with it regional employment. Beginning around 1960, the population began to explode. It grew vigorously as part of the greater Houston area. By 1973, Iowa Colony was officially incorporated. Then, by 1989, the town boasted a population of 661. Today, it's probably closer t0 1,000. Notably, the city hall, community center, and municipal court all sit within the same building.
